Feedback Works Better With a Clear Invitation
A useful lesson about creative collaboration: asking “What do you think?” can leave the other person guessing what kind of response would help.
A clearer invitation names the decision still open: “I’m choosing between these two openings. Could you tell me which feels easier to follow? I’m not looking for line edits yet.” That gives the other person room to be candid without turning the whole draft—or the relationship—into the subject of review.
The person asking still owns the choice. Feedback is input, not an obligation to agree; and either person can ask to pause or narrow the conversation.
A small first step: before your next feedback exchange, say what is open to change, what kind of response you want, and when you’ll revisit it together.
