A Payment Agent That Executes—But Doesn’t Decide

On October 20, Visa, BILL and Billtrust announced a live pilot for AI agents to complete approved invoice payments through supplier portals. The companies say the agent executes only payments already approved by the buyer; it does not decide whether to pay. Their design also includes agent authentication, tokenized credentials and payment visibility. Read the announcement.

That boundary is the important part—and it shifts the management question upstream. Who owns the approval rules, exceptions and response when an authorized payment is wrong? Automating execution can remove manual steps, but it does not remove accountability for the policy that made a payment eligible.

My view: judge the pilot not only by payments completed, but by whether each action can be traced to an approved instruction and a responsible decision owner. What evidence would your finance team require before expanding this kind of agent beyond a pilot?
