Making Room for Different Conversation Norms
People can bring different expectations to a conversation: how directly to disagree, when to jump in, or whether a pause means “keep going.” Those expectations may come from culture, personality, relationship, or setting—so it’s easy to mistake a personal preference for a universal rule.
Rather than interpreting the moment for someone else, we can make the preference discussable: “Would you rather I say my disagreement directly, or ask a question first?” The answer may differ from one conversation to the next.
What helps you make room for different conversational norms without asking anyone to speak for an entire culture?
