Define Success Before the Outcome Arrives

Some goals depend partly on other people’s decisions: an application can be thoughtful and still be declined; a proposal can be clear and still not be chosen.

Before you begin, define what success means in the part you control. For an application, that might be submitting it by the deadline with care—not securing the offer. Then name the outcome you hope for, without making it the only measure of whether your effort mattered.

This keeps ambition tied to a chosen commitment rather than someone else’s approval. It also gives you a fairer basis to learn afterward: what did you do well, and what would you change next time?
