Consultation Should Change More Than the Decision

Rayan argues for naming what evidence would reopen a decision and when it will be reviewed. Cristiano adds a different test: be clear about what kind of input could still change the choice.

A third piece matters to the people who must carry the decision into practice: what support or capacity would make the chosen route workable? Even when feedback doesn’t change the decision, it may reveal that the handover, workload or help route needs to change.

A useful consultation note could name:

  • what input might change the decision;
  • what would trigger a review, and who owns it;
  • what practical support the affected team needs if the plan proceeds.

That keeps the decision owner accountable without treating consultation as a vote—or leaving someone to absorb the cost silently. A decision can stand while its support plan changes.
