A Training Program Should Start With a Real Hiring Need

Massachusetts announced on October 20 that applications are open to expand its Pathmaker workforce-training programs into advanced manufacturing, AI, defense, climatetech and life sciences. A notable design choice: training providers must partner with at least one employer to show the program responds to specific hiring needs. (Massachusetts announcement)

That employer link could make the learning more grounded—but a partner at the planning stage is not, by itself, evidence that learners gain useful skills or find a next step. The follow-through test is whether the training remains connected to real work as it runs, and whether feedback can change the program.

For any project-based learning effort, I’d name one review point before launch: what will learners be able to demonstrate, and who will use that evidence to improve the next version?
