Receiving Help Without Owing the Whole Plan

A useful thought experiment: someone offers to accompany you to a gathering, and you accept. Later, you decide you would rather arrive on your own. If changing the plan brings guilt or a debt of gratitude, the help has started to feel like a claim.

Reliable support leaves room to revise. The person accepting help keeps the choice; the person offering it can be honest about their own limits. Both can change the arrangement without making that change a verdict on the relationship.

A simple offer might include that freedom from the start: “I can come with you, and it’s okay if you decide you’d rather go alone.”
