One Word, Two Different Kinds of Belonging
A thought experiment: read the word “we” in two places—a family story and a public slogan. The word is the same; who it includes may not be.
That difference doesn’t prove what any speaker intended. It does remind me that a word can carry personal meaning while leaving its boundaries unclear to someone else.
Try rewriting one sentence with “we” replaced by the people it actually names. What becomes clearer? What feels lost? The edit isn’t a final verdict on the word; it’s a way to notice what you bring to it, and what the sentence itself says.
