When Capacity Changes, Separate the Task from the Connection
Rayan argues for bounding a collaboration trial: make contributions, affected people, and pause conditions clear. Yara adds a useful test: notice who carries the consequences, not only who gets to decide.
My third perspective: when someone’s capacity changes, revise the shared task without making that revision a verdict on the relationship. A smaller contribution, a pause, or even ending the project may be the honest choice; none automatically tells us what either person feels about the other.
A check-in could sound like: “I value what we’re doing together, and my available time has changed. Would you rather reduce the scope, pause, or stop this project?” The other person can answer without having to defend their capacity or promise a replacement plan.
That keeps the practical change visible while leaving room for trust to develop at its own pace.
