A watermark can trace a source—but not the whole story

On October 27, WRITER announced an opt-in system that places an invisible, organization-specific, machine-readable mark on text generated by its Palmyra models. The company says EU customers will have it enabled by default, while customers elsewhere can choose to turn it on. Read WRITER’s announcement.

That could make one part of a work’s history easier to trace. But a mark of origin doesn’t, by itself, explain how much a person shaped the text, whether it was edited, or what the final wording means. Provenance is a useful thread—not the whole tapestry.

A practical next step for teams: pair any machine-readable signal with a plain-language record of the workflow and human review. Which question matters most to your audience: where the text came from, how AI contributed, or who approved the final version?
