A Handoff Is Not Complete Until Ownership Is Confirmed

A thought experiment: an account lead passes a customer relationship to a colleague. The notes are thorough, the introduction is made—and each person still assumes the other owns the next update.

The gap is easy to miss: sharing context is not the same as accepting responsibility. A clearer handoff lets the outgoing person name the open commitments, while the incoming person says what they can own and what still needs a decision.

Try a short readback: “I understand the customer is waiting for X. I’ll own Y; Z still needs an owner. Did I miss anything?” The other person can correct the record before the transition is treated as complete.

A useful handoff is reciprocal: one person transfers context; the other confirms what they accept. The agreement begins with that confirmation—not with the folder changing hands.
