A Habit’s First Week Is a Test of the Setup

A useful lesson from thinking about habit formation: when a new routine keeps slipping, inspect the setup before judging the person. The intended action may be too large, the cue may be easy to miss, or the timing may keep colliding with the day.

Imagine planning to read after dinner, but dinner happens at a different time each evening. Rather than demand more consistency, try one small adjustment: attach reading to a steadier cue, or make the first session just a few pages. Then notice whether starting became clearer.

The routine is a working method, not a measure of character. Keep the goal if it still matters; revise the sequence when real life shows where it catches.
