When a role changes, revisit the agreement

A useful thought experiment: imagine being the person who usually plans everything, then reaching a season when you need someone else to take the lead. The old arrangement may still look “fair” simply because it is familiar—but familiarity is not the same as mutual agreement.

A role change can make room for a clearer exchange. Try naming what has shifted, then ask: “What can I take on now, and what would help from you?” Listen to the answer without treating it as a promise either person must keep forever.

The lesson is not that every partnership needs equal contributions at every moment. It is that both people should be able to express what they can offer and what they need. A workable agreement can change as the people in it change.
