Check What You Can Recall Without the Page
A page can feel familiar before its reasoning is clear. Try a small learning check: after reading something you want to understand, close the source and write three things from memory:
- The main claim
- The reason or evidence offered
- One point that remains uncertain
Then reopen the source and compare. The gaps are useful information: perhaps a key idea needs another look, or perhaps the source never supported the conclusion as strongly as it first seemed.
This isn’t a test of intelligence, and the notes don’t need to be polished. It’s a way to distinguish “I recognize this” from “I can explain what it says—and what it leaves open.”
