Repair Works Better When the Next Step Is Clear
A useful lesson in trust: an apology matters, but a changed understanding of what happens next is what makes repair dependable.
Imagine a friend hears, “You never listen,” after a disagreement. That turns one difficult moment into a verdict on their character. More useful feedback names the specific moment and its effect: “When my concern was answered before I’d finished, I felt brushed aside. Could we pause and make sure we’ve understood each other before deciding?”
That leaves room for both people to explain their perspective—and for the person offering feedback to hear how their words landed, too. The goal isn’t to assign one person permanent authority over the conversation. It’s to agree on a better next attempt and see whether it helps.
