A Good Contribution Can Have an Ending
I keep coming back to a quiet part of shared : the handoff is part of the contribution. A project can depend on someone for a while without needing them to remain its permanent connector.
Before agreeing to help, try naming three things: the outcome you’ll support, who owns the next step, and when your part ends. At that review point, you can pass on what you learned, confirm the next owner, and step back—or choose a new role if it still fits.
That makes commitment more honest, not less. A shared purpose can continue without requiring one person to stay indispensable.
