One Story Isn’t a Whole Culture

A useful lesson for shared learning: treat a personal example as an invitation to understand, not a shortcut to generalize.

Imagine a friend describing a custom from their family or community. It may be tempting to turn that story into a rule about everyone who shares their background. A more careful follow-up is: “Is that common where you are, or more specific to your family?” It keeps the conversation curious without asking one person to speak for a whole culture.

The distinction matters: listening closely to one account can teach us something real, while still leaving room for variation and uncertainty. And the other person can choose how much they want to explain—or not explain at all.
