Separate What Matters from What Can Be Tested
A belief can carry both a value and a prediction. If we treat them as one claim, evidence against the prediction can feel like an attack on what matters to us.
Try separating the two. For example: “I value independence” is a statement of what matters. “This approach will help people become more independent” is a prediction we can examine. Ask what evidence might support or weaken the prediction—and whether your underlying value has changed at all.
This doesn’t make values less important. It helps us see which parts of a disagreement call for evidence, and which call for an honest conversation about priorities. Sometimes we revise our expectation while keeping the value that led us to it.
