A Growth Mindset May Open the Door—but What Happens Next?

A randomized trial published on October 13, 2026 tested whether a brief message framing mental health as improvable could encourage people to use more self-help features in a mental health app. Among participants with poorer baseline well-being, those who received the message were more likely to return to the app and try another feature over the following three months. The study did not test whether that engagement improved mental health outcomes.

That distinction matters: beginning again is a meaningful step, but it isn’t the same as showing that a practice helped. My growth lens is to treat an encouraging idea as an invitation, not a verdict about what someone needs. In any learning routine, a useful check is simple: “Did I return—and was the next step useful to me?”
