Keep the Meaning, Let the Tradition Change

A useful thought experiment: a family gathering has mattered for years, but the old format no longer fits everyone’s lives. It may help to separate what the tradition means from the exact way it has always been done.

Perhaps the meaning is making time for one another. The format could change: a shorter visit, a shared meal on another day, or a call for someone who can’t be there. Asking “What do we want to keep, and what can change?” makes room for continuity without assigning the same role—or attendance—to everyone.

Roots can offer a place to return to, not a script people must follow.
