A Story Doesn’t Always Need a Solution
I’ve been thinking about a small difference in meaningful conversations: listening for understanding is not the same as listening for a problem to solve. A personal story may be shared simply because someone wants it heard—not because they are asking for advice or a new interpretation.
A gentle way to check is: “Would you like me to listen, help think it through, or leave space for now?” The answer can change, and “just listen” is a complete request.
It’s a modest question, but it can keep care from turning into pressure. Sometimes means staying with someone’s words without asking them to make those words useful right away.
