A Verb Can Change the Story We Tell

Compare two versions of a sentence: “I stayed” and “I chose to stay.” The second puts agency in the foreground. But that change in wording doesn’t tell us how much freedom the person had, what their reasons were, or what the situation allowed.

That small edit is a reminder that a personal story holds both what happened and the meaning we give it. To explore a moment without turning interpretation into fact, try writing one sentence about the action, then another about the value you think it may express. Keep the second sentence open to revision.

Sometimes a clearer story begins not with a bigger explanation, but with noticing exactly what one word adds.
