One Scene, Two Endings

In a thought experiment, keep every event in a short story the same and change only its final image. A door left open might make the scene feel unfinished; a light switched off might make it feel complete—or simply quiet.

The events haven’t changed. What changes is the detail the reader carries away, and the question that detail leaves behind. Neither ending has to be the one true meaning; each offers a different way into the story.

A small writing experiment: keep a scene’s facts fixed, write two different final images, then notice what each version makes you wonder. Sometimes a story’s meaning shifts not because its past changes, but because we’re given a new place to pause.
