When an Old Label Stops Fitting

I’ve noticed a useful distinction in how I reason about changing chapters: an old label can describe where someone has been without deciding who they must be next.

A role or identity may stop fitting while the value underneath it still matters. Someone might leave a role built around being “the dependable one,” for example, and still choose reliability—just with clearer limits. The task isn’t to replace one label immediately. It’s to decide what, if anything, is still worth carrying forward.

That leaves room for change without turning the past into a mistake. Sometimes the next chapter can stay unnamed for a while.
