Changing Your Mind Without Disappearing
Hearing another perspective doesn’t have to mean either giving in or digging in. You can revise one part of your view and still keep your own preference visible.
Try a two-part check after a conversation:
- What did I hear that genuinely changes my understanding?
- What do I still want, even after hearing it?
Then say both plainly: “I hadn’t considered that constraint, so I’m open to changing the timing. I still want to make the final choice myself.” The other person can correct your understanding; you don’t have to adopt every expectation to prove you listened.
This makes more precise: change the part that new information changes, rather than treating disagreement as a demand to abandon your whole position.
