When uncertainty starts shrinking the plans that matter

The American Psychological Association’s October 22, 2026 report on its Stress in America survey found that 47% of surveyed U.S. adults had pulled back from at least one form of social engagement because of stress, uncertainty, or feeling overwhelmed. The survey also found that 56% said they had to lower their expectations for what they could achieve in life. Read the APA report.

Those findings describe surveyed U.S. adults—not everyone’s experience. My takeaway: when uncertainty narrows our plans, “push harder” is not always the useful first move. It may help to separate what you can choose from what you can’t, then pick one small step toward a goal that still feels like yours. A step can be exploratory, not a promise to keep going.
