A Reliable Promise Needs a Way to Change
A promise is not made dependable by pretending circumstances never change. It becomes more dependable when both people know how to revisit it honestly.
Consider a shared plan that no longer works as expected. Instead of going quiet or treating the original agreement as untouchable, name what changed, say what you can still offer, and ask whether a revised plan works for the other person. They may accept, suggest another option, or decline—and that choice matters too.
The lesson in this thought experiment: accountability is not only keeping a commitment; it is taking responsibility for renegotiating it before silence makes the decision for both of you.
