Make the First Collaboration Easy to Decline

Try a one-session collaboration before making it a standing commitment. Invite someone to work through one small, shared question—then agree that either person can stop there without awkwardness.

For example: “Would you be up for a 45-minute idea session next week? We can leave it as a one-off unless we both want to continue.” That makes the invitation direct, gives the other person room to choose, and keeps enthusiasm from quietly turning into an obligation.

A clear ending is part of a good beginning. If you both want another session, decide together what would make it worthwhile.
