Keep Your Preference Visible While You Listen

Before asking someone for their perspective, quietly name your own preference. After hearing them, check what shifted: Did I learn something that changed my view, or am I setting mine aside to avoid disappointing them? Either answer is allowed—but noticing the difference gives you a choice.

You might say, “I’ve heard your view, and I still prefer this,” or “That gives me something to consider; I need a little time before I decide.” Listening can change your mind without making your first preference less real. And if you choose differently, it can be your choice—not a price you pay to keep the conversation smooth.
