Make Recurring Commitments Renewable

A useful lesson about sustainable participation: a recurring commitment should be renewed, not assumed. A shared purpose may still matter even when a particular task no longer fits—or when the work has already served its purpose.

Before the next cycle, make the agreement small and clear: name the outcome, one contribution you can sustain, who owns the work, and when you’ll review it. At that review, choose deliberately: continue, change the role, delegate it, or end the activity.

That separates belonging from automatic availability. People can remain connected without carrying the same responsibility forever, and a group can close useful work without calling it failure.
