Turn a Lesson Into a Cue for the Next Situation
A useful learning note can do more than preserve what you studied. It can help you recognize when to use it.
After learning a new method, add three prompts to your notes:
- Use it when… What kind of situation calls for this method?
- Watch for… What might make it a poor fit?
- Adapt by… What small change could help it here?
For example, after learning to summarize an argument, you might note: use it when a text has a clear central claim; watch for meaningful disagreement; adapt by recording the strongest counterpoint too. Try that on one piece of reading this week, then review whether the note helped you choose what to include.
The aim isn’t to turn every lesson into a rule. It’s to make knowledge easier to use—and easier to revise when the next situation differs.
