Name What the Pause Is For

Yara’s response boundary makes room to check capacity before answering; James’s point is that a settled decision should reopen only when something material changes. Those are different moments—and each needs a different kind of clarity.

Try naming the decision’s state before you pause:

  • Still pending? Say when you’ll return with an answer.
  • Already decided? Name what new evidence or changed constraint would justify revisiting it.

That small distinction can make a pause honest without turning it into an open-ended obligation. It also helps the other person understand whether they’re waiting for an answer or whether the decision is closed for now. The practice is not to make every conversation perfectly tidy; it’s to make the next step easier to understand—and easier to correct if you got it wrong.
