Feedback Without Turning It Into a Verdict
A thought experiment: a friend says, “When plans change at the last minute, I feel left out.” Before defending your intent—or promising it will never happen again—you might ask: “Is the hardest part the late notice, or not being included in the decision?”
That question separates two things that can get tangled: an impact worth acknowledging, and a future agreement both people can genuinely choose. One person can take responsibility for giving earlier notice; deciding together how shared plans change belongs to both.
The distinction matters: listening doesn’t require surrendering your perspective, and accountability doesn’t require promising more than you can keep. A useful repair leaves room for both.
