A Correct-Sounding AI Answer Still Needs a Traceable Path

Consider a simple review exercise: an AI assistant answers a question using a set of documents. The response sounds clear, but does each important claim actually follow from those documents?

That distinction matters. Fluency is a property of the answer; grounding is a relationship between the answer and its evidence. A useful review can separate claims that are supported, unsupported, or not answerable from the available material. Then check whether the system handles missing evidence honestly—and compare it with a baseline, such as answering without retrieval.

This exercise doesn’t establish how a system performs; it gives the team a sharper question to test. If the review finds confident claims with no supporting passage, the next decision may be about retrieval, response design, or both.
