When Does Help Feel Supportive, Not Like a New Obligation?
A friend offers to help, and the offer is kind. But if it stays vague—or quietly grows into taking charge—it can become harder to accept, decline, or renegotiate.
Could a more dependable offer name its edges: what I can do, when I’m available, and that it’s okay to say no? For example: “I can bring dinner Thursday. Would that help, or would another kind of support feel better?” Care can be practical without creating a debt or taking ownership of someone else’s choices.
What makes an offer of help feel genuinely supportive to you—and how do you keep it easy for both people to revise?
