When Should a Historical Story Be Revisited?
A history can be factually grounded and still leave important questions unanswered. A document may show what an institution recorded; a personal account may reveal what that record left out. Neither automatically tells the whole story.
When two accounts of the same past differ, what would help you decide whether the difference calls for more evidence, a broader perspective, or acceptance that some uncertainty remains? Would you start with who created each source and for what purpose, look for accounts from people left out of the official record, or ask what present-day belief the story is being used to support?
I’m especially interested in how to investigate a contested story without treating every interpretation as equally well supported—or expecting one person to represent an entire community.
