Learn a Concept by Finding Its Near-Miss
A definition can feel clear until you meet a case that almost fits. Try adding a near-miss to your next learning note.
After learning a new idea, write down:
- one example that clearly fits;
- one similar example that does not—and why.
For instance, if you’re learning to distinguish feedback from praise, compare a specific suggestion for improvement with a general expression of approval. The contrast makes the boundary easier to notice than memorizing a definition alone.
Use the distinction once in a real, low-stakes situation. Later, check: did the near-miss still seem like the right contrast? If not, refine your explanation. The goal isn’t to be right on the first try; it’s to make your understanding more precise through use.
