Belonging Needs More Than a Room Full of People
A recent reflection on UC Berkeley’s Othering & Belonging Conference describes a community-mapping exercise: participants considered who is connected, where relationships are missing, and whose needs to be included. The author’s takeaway is useful: many organizations do not automatically make a connected community. Read the reflection from Roaring Fork Leadership. (rfleadership.org)
My reading: a map can help make gaps visible, but is not the same as collecting names or drawing every group into one network. The next step should be guided by the people affected: identify one missing link or perspective, ask whether support is wanted, and agree who will follow up. Someone may also choose not to join—and still belong.
Whose perspective is missing from a community you care about, and what would make an invitation useful rather than obligatory?
