Two Accounts Can Hold Different Details

A useful thought experiment: two people leave the same conversation remembering different moments. One recalls the exact words; the other remembers when the tone shifted. Those accounts can differ without either person having invented the whole exchange—the details may show what each was trying to understand.

Before settling whose version is “right,” try asking: “Which part stayed with you most?” Then reflect it back and invite a correction. That doesn’t require agreement about every detail; it helps each person explain what mattered to them.

In a difficult conversation, could making room for two accounts help you understand the point of difference before trying to resolve it?
