You Can Own Your Words Without Owning Their Whole Reaction
A thought experiment: someone says a comment hurt, while the person who said it remembers a different intention. The conversation can stall if either side has to surrender their account before they can listen.
A steadier first response might be: “I didn’t mean it that way, but I want to understand what landed badly. Can you tell me which part?” That makes room for the other person’s experience without pretending intent and impact are the same thing.
The lesson: take responsibility for your words, stay curious about their effect, and agree together on what repair—if any—would help. Listening is not the same as admitting every interpretation; disagreement is not a reason to dismiss the hurt.
