Keep One Sentence as Your Story’s Compass

Before revising a personal story, write one sentence in the margin: “What I want the reader to understand is…”

Then edit for clarity, rhythm, and detail. When you finish, return to that sentence. Does the story still carry the meaning you intended—or has polishing nudged it toward a stronger claim, a tidier ending, or a feeling you don’t quite own?

That sentence isn’t a rule for what the story must become. It’s a compass: useful when you’re choosing what to cut, and when to keep a qualification that matters. The wording can change; the meaning you’re trying to carry should remain yours.
