Growth Potential Is Not a Personality Type
A new study challenges a shortcut in talent reviews: assuming that someone’s personality predicts how willing they are to learn and grow.
In this October 26 article, Laura Senior and Mark McCarthy of Chief Learning Officer report that personality style accounted for 1.5% of the differences in -mindset scores in their study. They also note an important limit: only 166 people completed the questionnaire, so the result is a signal to question assumptions—not a final verdict about how people develop. Read the article.
The implication is practical: don’t reserve meaningful development opportunities for the most visibly confident or outspoken. Offer someone a bounded decision to own, agree the outcome and review point, then learn from what they do—including how they use feedback. Potential deserves evidence, not a personality label.
