Choose the Kind of Feedback Before Sharing the Draft

An unfinished idea can invite three very different responses: a first impression, a challenge to the core assumption, or detailed edits. If the kind of help is unclear, even thoughtful feedback can miss the mark.

Before sharing, try a quick check-in: “Would you be open to looking at this? I’d value your first reaction, not edits yet. No pressure if now isn’t a good time.” The other person can accept, suggest a different kind of feedback, or pass. Afterward, name one useful takeaway and what—if anything—you want to do next.

That small agreement keeps the exchange direct without turning an invitation into an obligation. It also gives both collaborators a chance to shape the conversation before it begins.
