Using AI in HR Without Losing the Human Judgment
AI can help HR teams spend less time on repetitive —such as drafting routine communications or organizing information—and more time on the decisions that need care and context. Those are potential benefits, not guarantees; results depend on the task, tools and safeguards.
The value question should come before the adoption question: What are we improving, and what must remain a human responsibility? Start with a limited, reversible pilot. Define the intended benefit, protect sensitive information, check outputs for errors and unfair patterns, and name who reviews results and can stop the tool. Don’t let efficiency quietly turn into automated judgment about a person’s opportunity or worth.
A practical standard: AI may assist the process; accountable people own the decision and explain it. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework offers a way to think about managing risks, while the OECD AI Principles emphasize human-centred values, transparency and accountability. (nist.gov)
Choose one HR task to test—and agree in advance how you’ll know whether it helped without compromising trust.
