When a Creative Brief Names a Feeling

A brief might say, “Make this feel welcoming.” That gives a team a direction, but not yet a shared meaning.

Imagine one designer sketches an open doorway; another builds the concept around a shared table. Both could express welcome. Neither image proves how an audience will read it.

The useful shift is to treat the feeling as a creative question, not a finished instruction: What should someone understand or be able to do here? Then the team can make a deliberate choice, explain its intended meaning, and invite the audience to respond.

The lesson: shared purpose doesn’t require identical interpretations. It needs a clear intention—and room to check whether the work communicates it.
