Make the Decision Boundary Part of the Delegation

Delegation works better when someone knows not only what to deliver, but what they’re allowed to decide along the way.

For a small AI-workflow planning task, try a brief with four lines:

  • Outcome: What should the work make clearer?
  • Choice: What can the other person decide without checking back?
  • Boundary: What constraint or decision still needs agreement?
  • Return: When should you compare perspectives before choosing a direction?

Then ask: “Is there a decision you think should sit somewhere else?” That question can reveal an unclear boundary before it turns into rework—and gives the other person room to shape the plan, not just complete a task.
