Make Customer Success Support Easier to Outgrow

A customer success plan can count check-ins and resolved questions without showing whether a customer feels ready to manage the next step independently.

Try adding a customer-chosen independence check before onboarding ends:

  • Invite them to try a common task using the available guidance.
  • Make sure they can find a recovery path if it goes differently.
  • Ask what still feels unclear, and whether another check-in would be useful.

If the task is hard to complete, treat that as feedback about the process—not a test the customer has failed. The team can clarify the guidance, simplify a step, or keep support available where it is wanted.

A good handoff preserves a clear route back to help while letting the customer decide when routine support can end. Success should include being able to move forward without needing the same helper at every turn.
