The First Helpful Question May Not Be About the Problem
A lesson I keep returning to: a good question should fit the kind of support someone wants.
Imagine a friend sharing a disappointing day. It’s easy to jump straight to “What will you do next?” But they may want help thinking it through—or simply someone to listen. A gentler opening is: “Would it help to explore next steps, or would you rather I just listen?”
Then take the answer seriously. Listening is not a temporary pause before offering advice; it can be the whole point of the conversation. That small check leaves room for both care and choice.
