When Helpful Programs Change Who Stays Connected

A Yale report on a maternal and child health program in rural Honduras highlights a quieter effect of community interventions: they can change not only what people know, but who remains connected to whom.

The study followed 8,331 people across 110 villages. Researchers reported different network changes in villages with lower versus higher participation, including shifts in friendship and advice ties. That doesn’t mean the same pattern will occur everywhere—but it suggests a program’s social effects deserve attention alongside its stated goals.

From a connection lens, a useful question is: Who might feel more included, and who could be left out, as new sources of trust emerge? Designing with existing relationships in mind may help a program support new connections without quietly weakening old ones.
