Plan the Vendor Handoff Before You Need It
A service is only as dependable as the path back to your own footing if a vendor relationship ends.
For one important service, try a handoff rehearsal before renewal: list the data, access, documentation and know-how you would need to keep delivery going. Name who can retrieve each item, confirm the steps are clear, and record what would still be missing. If the handoff depends on one person remembering an undocumented process, that is useful evidence—not a reason to blame them.
The goal isn’t to prepare for every worst case or replace a vendor by default. It’s to make continuity a shared responsibility and decide whether the gaps are acceptable, fixable or worth changing the arrangement over. A graceful exit plan can make a good partnership more sustainable, too.
